Marie Kondo, a Japanese organizing consultant and author, is taking the world by storm with her best-selling book and a new Netflix series. 2019 is the year of tidying up. Her method, “if it doesn’t spark joy, be gone with it” is now a universally accepted technique to rid your home of clutter. We are all guilty of hoarding in one way or another. In Kondo’s best selling book, The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up, she introduces the KonMari Method. This method emphasizes organizing your home by the categories of items opposed to certain rooms. The categories include clothing, books, paper documents, sentimental items, and “Komono” (miscellaneous). As the world’s first ever decluttering celebrity, Kondo is making her mark.

Kondo stopped by the Elle Decor offices to discuss her tips for tidying up in 2019. Her first step is to visualize the kind of life you want this year so you have a clear idea and vision. Once there is a clear goal to achieve, the motivation comes along.

Once you have a vision, review what you own currently and what those items mean to you. Start with clothing. Bring them into one open space, make a pile, and take each item one at a time. Think about how it fits into the goal you have created for yourself.

For those that are nervous about having way too many things to go through, I understand. Parting with items is hard. You can take this process one step at a time. Start with just one category. One day look at only tops and sweaters then the next day move onto pants. Just take it one step at a time.

Small spaces can bring an added difficult element to tidying up. Kondo started working in Japan where the spaces are all small. She suggests keeping items together in one space. If you use drawers, stand the items up vertically so you can see each one. This also saves space. It can be a daunting task to declutter your home and think with a new mindset. The new year is the perfect opportunity to get started. Marie Kondo has made herself well known with all of her tips and tricks in this category. Start 2019 with a focus on what brings you joy.
