Transitioning into a work from home situation has become the norm for most of us these days. With the news spreading across most states that schools will be closed for the remainder of the school year, parents are now taking on the role of a teacher as well. This is adding a lot of stress to the daily lives and routines of both parents and kids. It can be so hard to manage, so here are a few tips to keep in mind as we navigate this crazy time.
Prep Both Yourself and the Kids
At first I am sure you thought that adjusting to working from home would be great, you can spend more time with the kids and save a lot of time. However, it is hard for everyone to understand the situation. The place that was once a gathering spot where you would relax and play at the end of the day is now where work is happening. Kids are adjusting to no longer being with their friends all day and also with you having work responsibilities that take up most of if not all of the day. The lines may start to get blurred so you need to establish boundaries. Simply tell the kids when you are in the office or a specific room, you are at work and not available for play. One example of keeping the kids engaged is to have them create a sign that is flipped between green and red to show when they are free to come in or when you need quiet time.
Morning Routines Will Save You
This is sooooo important! Since you are not getting that switch in your brain when you enter the office, it can be hard to get into work productively at home. This is going to be especially hard if you do not get ready in the morning. As good as it sounds to stay in your pajamas all day, it is going to make it difficult for you to work to your full potential. Make sure you are still waking up at the same time you would if you were to go into the office. You want to emulate your normal work routine as much as you can.
Don’t Be So Hard On Yourself
It is impossible to both work your full time job and be a full time elementary school teacher. There are going to be slip ups and things are going to fall through the cracks. You need to remember that it is okay! There is only so much that can be done in this situation. Take breaks when you need it. If you have to spend more time a day working on school with your children, be sure to communicate with your team. Let them know what is going on and they may even have great resources or recommendations beyond this to help you out!
Working from home right now is not simple. Adding children into the mix throws another curve ball. Juggling it all can feel impossible sometimes but hopefully these tips help!
